About

Our project

Our goal is to find a sustainable approach to solve different living conditions and situations in Chamanculo, Maputo, Mozambique. In cooperation with a local NGO, ASSCODECHA (asscodecha.org) and the BLOOM project (bloom.ayy.fihttp://ayy.fi/blogi/2014/03/21/bloom-aaltolaiset-avartamassa-maailmaansa/) we visited Chamanculo in February 2014. After seeing the situation onsite we decided that change has to be initiated by people, who are local and know different angles of their own situation, which cannot be seen from outside. Therefore we aim to create an atmosphere that motivates and activates people, which in a long-term will lead to sustainable solutions and increase the life quality of locals of the whole community!

Caroline

I am a master´s student in the Creative Sustainability Programme at Aalto University with a background in architecture and engineering. I have always been interested in sustainability matters and lately it has been part of my daily topics! Being part of this project represents for me facing different challenges and realities within a new environment. Our fieldtrip to Mozambique and volunteering experience in Chamanculo was very eye-opening and beyond the project itself, it raised questions on a personal level about life and values.

Anja

I will graduate this year from Neuroscience (Brain and Mind) in Aalto University, School of Science. The trip to Mozambique and our project in Chamanculo was eye-opening and changed my thinking about values, goals and expectations in life. With this project, we can now apply what we learned during this time. I believe it will offer a possible sustainable solution that integrates and involves locals into the process of change from the root.

Mariko

I'm a fifth year student in the degree program of engineering physics and mathematics, majoring in systems science. I've always enjoyed traveling and I'm very interested in all aspects of sustainability; ecological, economical and social. Visit to Chamanculo completely changed my view of development cooperation, and helped me better understand the circumstances of those people's lives, and the implications of those circumstances.

Mikaela

My background is in civil engineering and urban management and I’m now studying the first year of my master in Environmental Engineering, this semester as an exchange student at Aalto University. I wanted to join the course in order to get to work with real challenges and hoping to contribute to a better environment. Although I was not able to be part of the field trip, I have learnt a lot form the project and hope to keep on doing so!

Perttu

I'm a fourth year student at Aalto University School of Business. I study management as my major and I'm especially interested in project management and BOP (base of the pyramid) businesses. Visiting Chamanculo in Mozambique was an unforgettable experience and I feel like I learnt a lot during the trip. I hope that our course project will be helpful in efforts to create a positive and future-oriented mindset.
